Workshops
Small groups, lots of fun.
Rediscover the artistic self within.
Workshops are run at the Bellevue Art Space, in response to expressions of interest (minimum of 5). Please advise via the contact page, email or phone, your interest in any of the workshops. I can then notify you as they are scheduled.
Bookbinding for beginners
Learn basic skills of bookbinding with just the right amount of inspiration to set you off on a path of creativity, limited only by your own imagination. In one workshop you will complete a book from scratch. ‘All you need’ kit provided.
Coptic binding
An ancient method of bookbinding and involves sewing covers together with pages and features visible stitching on the spine. This allows the book to open flat and the uncovered stitching to feature as a decorative element of the book.
$60 for 3 hour workshop, including notes, materials and tools required to complete the project. Light refreshments also provided. Suitable for all levels of experience (over 12 years of age).
Square back case
Create your own notebook or journal using a ‘case-binding’ method, generally known as a ‘three-piece’ or ‘square back case’. This is a series of sections (sets of pages known as signatures) sewn together then encased in a hard cover.
$60 for 3 hour workshop, including notes, materials and tools required to complete the project. Light refreshments also provided. Suitable for all levels of experience (over 12 years of age).
Printmaking Introduction
A printmaking workshop is an excellent way to prepare material for the artists’ books workshop.
Different techniques explored. Design to presentation. Lino cut, collagraph, (and other) printing kept simple using readily available tools to achieve great results. Lots of fun; no experience necessary, just bring your ideas and enthusiasm.

As three-dimensional items, books can be sculptured, painted, printed, cut, folded, and presented in all manner of ways. Resemblance to a book as we know it can be a token reference to it being an assemblage of words and or images, on all manner of surfaces, with perhaps a start, middle and end. You are limited only by your imagination. Bring your own embellishments and imagination.
Explore the properties of paper through the up-cycling process of repurposing books to inject new life and meaning. Demonstration of a range of simple and fun techniques to encourage participants to view books as a material that can be cut, torn, folded, pasted, rolled, and generally played with to create interesting, and amusing new sculptural forms, emphasizing the practical nature of the recycling/reuse message.

Book Repurposing
“It was a morning of inspiration and purpose at the Library Book Re-purposing workshop with Julie Hein. Exclamations of "Wow this is so much fun", "I never realised I could make a work of art" & "We must do this again" were heard throughout the room. Most attending took away with them a finished item and a work in progress, each promising to return and share with us a photo of their completed handicraft. Thank you so much artist extraordinaire Julie Hein. Please do visit Toodyay Library again to share your exquisite talent:)”

Artists' books
An Artist's Book rewards leisurely, intimate observation. It can be an assembled collection of the artist’s works, an artwork-in-itself, something to be appreciated page by page or viewed as a whole. As three-dimensional items, books can be sculpted, painted, printed, cut, folded and presented in all manner of ways.

Drawing for Beginners
Explore techniques and rediscover the pleasure of drawing. Relaxed, friendly, informal environment. Great way to escape, engage with your creative self and de-stress whilst developing and expanding your creativity. I have heard said that if you explain to a child that you teach adults to draw, the child will most certainly be puzzled and wonder how they forgot.
